Ming Garden Restaurant at Penang Times Square

There is a new Chinese restaurant in town. Recently opened at the Penang Times Square, Ming Garden Restaurant is undoubtedly one of the largest restaurants on the island. Built in 20,000 square feet of space, Ming Garden can accommodate up to 100 banquet tables or 1000 pax.

The restaurant has an impressive décor, most notably for the colourful and modern lantern-shaped pendant lamps adorning the ceilings of the restaurant. Those who opt to dine in private will also not be disappointed because it has an abundance of elegantly designed private dining rooms, equipped with AV or karaoke systems for their singing pleasure.

We were impressed with the food. The cooking style was simple yet creative and the ingredients used were fresh, to note a few. This is definitely one Chinese restaurant to watch out for in Penang.

The restaurant offers set menus which are reasonably priced including birthday set menus starting from RM398++ and wedding packages starting from RM378+.

Humble Beginnings Macha Latte Mille Crepe

If you have been following, you will remember that we are fans of Humble Beginnings crepe cake. Recently, the office folks satisfied their craving for mille crepe with yet another one of Amos' creations, the Macha Latte crepe cake. (See my previous post here for other Humble Beginnings creations)

In case you have forgotten, a Mille Crepe is a French Cake with “mille” meaning “a thousand” layers. In Humble Beginnings' Creations, there are 20 layers of crepes with a delightful combination of Fresh Cream and Vanilla Custard between each layer. The topmost layer is caramelized to give it a nice smoky sugary flavour. Everything is hand-made and hand-layered; a true labour of love. (Source: Humble Beginnings website)

Macha Latte Mille Crepe

According to Amos, the Macha Latte crepe cake is using the highest grade pure green tea powder from Japan for a rich green tea flavour and loaded with red beans. I personally like the combination because the green tea gives a hint to bitterness to an otherwise sweet crepe cake. Perfect for my palate indeed. :)

Cool Bananas Children's Party Package

Our niece Abigail turned four in May and her daddy and mommy threw a birthday party for her at the Cool Bananas Parkroyal Hotel Penang and invited her friends from nursery.

The Cool Bananas Children's Party Package includes free flow of chilled soft drinks, a choice of 9 snacks, two fun games organised by the resort's activities staff, a complimentary cake, use of swimming pool and 70-foot long waterslide.

Abigail and her friends played in the swimming pool to their hearts' content and were later treated to a buffet which consisted of fish fingers, fruits, two types of pizza, pasta, fried rice, chicken bites, potato wedges and mini burgers.

I am quite sure Abigail had a blast at her 4th birthday party. Happy Birthday, Abby!

Mother's Day Cake and Birthday Cakes from Baskin Robbins and Bread History

We bought the special Mother's Day ice cream cake from Baskin Robbins with the Very Berry Strawberry flavour, which is loaded with real strawberries.

The ice cream cake is layered with chocolate cake at the top and bottom and strawberry ice cream in between. The strawberry ice cream was a bit sourish thus it was not too sweet and was a great combination with the chocolate cake.

The strawberry ice cream cake was refreshing and was just nice and not too filling at the end of a Mother' Day lunch at the Maple Palace Restaurant (see post here).

We happened to be celebrating my dear sis birthday on the same day so we bought another Chocolate Strawberry / Cherry Cake from Bread History at Queensbay Mall (basement, in front of Jaya Jusco).

We have always liked Bread History cakes and I have to say this chocolate cake was just as good.

We loved the ice cream cake from Baskin Robbins so much that we decided to get another cake for mom's birthday two weeks later.

This time I got the 6" round cake with the Jamoca Almond Fudge ice cream and chocolate cake at RM88. The cake looked rather small but was enough to go around among nine of us after a heavy lunch.

Happy 60th Birthday mom! May there be many more happy years to come. 

Swens Cartoon Birthday Cakes

If you have read my previous post on Swens Homemade Cakes, Swens has been the loyal baker that I normally go to for birthday cakes.

Quite recently in March, Swens was tasked to whip up a cake with the favourite cartoon character of my dear nephew Shawn i.e. Barney, the purple dinosaur. We asked him to replicate a previous Barney cake which he featured on his blog and what he did was to take a step further to improvise it. The end result was simply beyond our expectations and I was very pleased with it.

Swens came to mind again when my friend ST was planning for her son Ryan's 5th birthday party at home. Ryan's favourite cartoon hero is Ben 10 (Alien Force) and his mommy didn't have to think twice to get a Ben 10 cake for him.

Swens Homemade Cake

Swens Homemade Cake makes some of the most beautiful wedding cakes in Penang. The man behind all these beautiful cakes is Swens Wong who has been in this business, together with his wife, for 10 years now. He operates from his home at Taman Sin Chor Chit Apartment, Block 10-G-2.

Check out Swens' blog at http://swenscake.blogspot.com/ and you will be overwhelmed by the variety of cakes that Swens and his wife have created over the years. Their specialty is wedding cakes but they are also famous for their 'Creativity" range of cakes and their fruit cakes.

According to Swens, they can customize the wedding cakes based on your request and fancy so just let your imagination and creativity decide .

Recently, I ordered a "Black & White" cake from their "Creativity" range. Swens highly recommended this sellout cake of his. The cake may look small for a 1kg and sound expensive at RM90 but it is definitely worth it because it was very compact and full of chocolate. The chocolate brownie cake was very moist and the flower petals are made from white chocolate. The blue chocolate at the side are coloured with natural food coloring. The result was a beautiful and chic cake that was also yummy at the same time.

They are currently renovating their new showroom next to their house so customers can view their work and they can discuss about the design of the cake they want in a nice and comfortable setting.
