HOT & ROLL

HOT&ROLL is a Malaysian franchise selling Crispy wrap (a very thin cooked pancake made from a home-recipe flour mix) and Paratha wrap from their 'on-the-go' kiosks. Their network is still relatively small for now and they have kiosks primarily in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur but they are growing.

According to their website, they started off with one kiosk located at Cheras Leisure Mall in April 2003 and sold Crispy Wraps. In November 2007 HOT&ROLL was granted Franchisor status.

A HOT&ROLL kiosk recently opened at the basement of Queensbay Mall right opposite the Jaya Jusco supermarket. HOT&ROLL offers 17 types of sweet and savoury fillings or flavours namely Strawberry, Apple Cinnamon, Banana Chocolate, Coconut, Kaya 'N' Cheese, Crunchy Peanut, Ice cream, Chicken & Cheese, Chicken Floss, BBQ Chicken, Satay Chicken, Curry Chicken, Black Pepper Beef, Bolognese Beef, Pizza, Tuna Salad, Double Cheese N’ Onion.

Savoury Paratha is sold at RM3.90 each while Savoury Crispy is sold at RM5.90 each. Sweet Paratha is sold at RM2.90 each while Sweet Crispy is sold at RM4.90 each. You can add RM1 for extra topping.

The Paratha is pre-made and then frozen. When ordered, the Paratha will be placed on the pan before the filling is added. Thus, the wait is normally quite short.

The Crispy wrap is made from home-recipe pre-mized flour so the preparation time is relatively short as well. It's just like how love letters (kuih kapit) are made.

High Protein Chicken Sausages Wrapped in Wholemeal Chapatti

They are currently running a promotion with two High Protein Chicken Sausages Wrapped in Wholemeal Chapatti and one cup of drink selling at RM5.90 (normal price RM9.30)

Chicken & Cheese

Apple Cinnamon

One day we decided to order quite a number of their fillings to try i.e. Apple Cinnamon, Banana Chocolate, Kaya 'N' Cheese, Chicken & Cheese, Black Pepper Beef, Pizza, Tuna Salad and the High Protein Chicken Sausages Wrapped in Wholemeal Chapatti.

We absolutely loved the Paratha and Chapatti. They were crispy and flavourful. All of the savoury fillings we tried were very good.

P/S: For some reasons, HOT&ROLL reminds me of my favourite crêpes and waffles restaurant at the Swissotel Singapore: "Out of the Pan". The restaurant serves a variety of sweet and savoury crêpes and waffles in an alfresco setting, right next to a water fountain. Excellent ambience and great crêpes.

Marrybrown

We decided to give the Marrybrown outlet in Bukit Jambul mall a try since this fast food chain seemed to have made a comeback with a few new outlets opening in Penang recently. To our surprise, they have quite an elaborate menu ranging from fried chicken to burgers to local delights to seafood to Value and Kiddy Meals (with gift), jelly ice cream, float, sundae etc.

According to their website, Marrybrown is Malaysian owned and managed. Marrybrown was founded in 1981 and is the largest home grown fast food chain with over 250 outlets in Malaysia, Indonesia, China, India, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Azerbaijan, Syria & Iran.

Seafood Porridge
Seafood porridge served with schredded crabsticks, MB crispy chili prawn paste, fried onion and spring onion.

Double Chicken Delight Combo
1 piece of Original / Hotouch fried chicken and 1 chicken burger. Comes with regular Pepsi.

They seem to try to position themselves as something in between the two existing biggest fast food chains in Malaysia. Actually, I have to give them the credit for doing quite a good job. They were enjoying very brisk business when we were there on a Saturday during dinner hours.

The seafood porridge, though lacking in ingredients, was quiet special with the chili prawn paste. The fried chicken was crispy and I liked the fact that the burger bun was very soft and full of sesame seeds.

Domino's Pizza Cajun Fries

We have always loved Domino's pizza. I was walking past the Domino's store at Kristal Point and decided to take out the new cajun fries (available for take out only).

The Cajun Fries are coated in a combination of paprika, oregano, garlic poweder, black pepper, cayenne and chilli powder and then oven-baked. We like the fact that the fries are oven-baked and not deep fried. The fries were crispy with a hint of spicyness, just the way we like it. It is also value-for-money at RM2.80 for a large 200gm serving (normal price RM5.80).

Cajun Fries (Sorry, picture quality could have been better)

I also ordered our all-time favourites, the CinnaStix and BreadStix. As the name says it, the Cinnastix has a strong cinnamon flavour and great to go with the condensed milk that comes with it. The Breadstix is another winner with lots of parmesan cheese powder sprinkled on top of the bread.

Dela Duck Take Away Shop

Dela Duck is apparently a fast food take away franchise chain headquartered in the state of Delaware, United States of America with its marketing arm in Hong Kong to manage the Asia Pacific and the Middle East countries.

Dela Duck is like your KFC, McDonalds, A&W but they only sell one item on their menu i.e. pressure cooked herbal duck. Based on their website, the secret recipe of Dela Duck includes the removal of fats, marinating and seasoning the duck with a concoction of 39 herbs for 10 hours and pressure-cooking the duck minus the fats and cholesterol.

A Dela Duck outlet has recently opened at Perak Road so we decided to give it a try. The outlet is clean and parking is a breeze. There is only one small round table at the outlet for waiting as the concept of this franchise chain is for take away only.

They only have one half duck readily available when we reached there and to order more we would have to wait for another 20 minutes. I guess they have decided not to pre-cook too many ducks since they are newly opened and business may not have picked up yet.

The half a duck (RM18) was cut into smaller pieces and wrapped in an aluminium foil and put in a paper bag. By the time we got home which was 1/2 hour away, the duck meat was rather cold and dry. We could taste the herbs in the duck meat but we would have appreciated it more if the duck meat was a little more moist.

Anyway, the concept of removing the fats from the duck is quite interesting so head on to the outlet if you would like to give it a try.

Lily's Vegetarian Kitchen

Lily's Vegetarian Kitchen at Madras Lane is a lacto-vegetarian restaurant where only dairy products are used apart from vegetables and nuts. Lily's is made up of two floors with the ground floor serving fast-food ala carte menu while the upper floor caters for private functions including sit-down course dinners, steamboats and buffets with a seating capacity of 150 patrons. Lily's also provides outdoor catering service.

I would recommend Lily's for its extensive array of Western, Oriental, Nyonya, Fusion dishes and the fact that it uses mostly soya-based products and less gluten.

Penang Laksa (RM5)

Xiang Chun Noodles (RM5)

Chix Rice (RM6)

Green Curry Rice (RM6)

Mushroom Soup (RM4)

Wan Tan Mee (RM3.50)

Lam Mee (RM3.50)

Lasagna (RM10)

Pasembur (RM5)

Pizza 8" (RM12)

Apart from the mushroom soup and Xiang Chun noodles which were quite mediocre for our taste, the rest of food were quite good and interesting. This is definitely the place to go if you want a good variety of vegetarian food with less gluten. Watch this space for my post on the course dinner at Lily's Vegetarian Kitchen at its upper floor.
