Ming Garden Restaurant at Penang Times Square

There is a new Chinese restaurant in town. Recently opened at the Penang Times Square, Ming Garden Restaurant is undoubtedly one of the largest restaurants on the island. Built in 20,000 square feet of space, Ming Garden can accommodate up to 100 banquet tables or 1000 pax.

The restaurant has an impressive décor, most notably for the colourful and modern lantern-shaped pendant lamps adorning the ceilings of the restaurant. Those who opt to dine in private will also not be disappointed because it has an abundance of elegantly designed private dining rooms, equipped with AV or karaoke systems for their singing pleasure.

We were impressed with the food. The cooking style was simple yet creative and the ingredients used were fresh, to note a few. This is definitely one Chinese restaurant to watch out for in Penang.

The restaurant offers set menus which are reasonably priced including birthday set menus starting from RM398++ and wedding packages starting from RM378+.

Beijing Roasted Duck Chicken Rice at Loong Heng

The chicken rice and roasted duck at Kedai Makanan Loong Heng (Pulau Tikus, same row as Yataimura) is apparently quite famous. I think I have tasted far better roasted duck but I sure liked the wide selection of steamed soup.

Roast Duck
Overall, I like the roast duck and barbecued pork. The environment is comfortable for a chicken rice shop, with air-cond etc.

Restoran First Famous Federal (Lorong Susu)

We were at Restoran First Famous Federal at Lorong Susu which is popular for its roast chicken, roast duck, char siew and roast pork on a Saturday for lunch. They were enjoying brisk business with a sizable lunch crowd.

We ordered the roast duck (Pei Pa duck) and roast pork. The preserved vegetables ('Kiam Chai") soup was on the house and they were very generous with it. Some other chicken and duck rice sellers would have charged for the soup.

The duck skin was crispy and so was the roast pork skin. The preserved vegetables soup was thick, spicy and tasty and came with duck meat and lots of preserved vegetables.

The total bill came to RM21.80 for a plate of roast duck (Pei Pa duck) and roast pork combination and three plates of white rice. My dad feels that the price was very reasonable given the big plate of roast meat ;)

According to Penang-Online.com, the current owner Eddie Chan inherited his father's forte and expanded the business. His father apparently ran a very popular Hainanese Chicken Rice stall in Penang more than 30 years ago.

Address: 3, Lorong Susu, Pulau Pinang.
