Kopi Cine Cafe - Straits Collection

Kopi Cine is a recently opened cafe at 55 Stewart Lane, which is part of the Straits Collection project in Penang. The project is another brainchild of the Bon Ton and Temple Tree Langkawi owner, Narelle McMurtrie.

The enclave is made up of two rows of old Chinese shophouses at Stewart Lane and Armenian Street respectively, which have since been turned into boutique hotels, a café (Kopi Cine), a public reading and film space (The Reading Room), retail outlets (Bon Ton The Shop and China Joes), and a soon to be opened tea salon.

Kopi Cine comes from the word 'Kopi' (coffee in Malay) and 'Cine' which is the short form of Cinema because Asian movies are shown free of charge at the courtyard area of The Reading Room every night.

The Reading Room

The Reading Room is a public reading space and is stocked with coffee table books, art books, novels and magazines etc.

Asian movies are shown at 9 pm here everyday.

Kopi Cine specializes in Italian coffee and homemade cakes, desserts and ice creams. Their food menu is divided into breakfast (9am to Noon), lunch (Noon to 4pm) and tapas / dinner / sharing plates (6 to 10:30pm) menus. They also have very elaborate drinks, cocktails and wine lists.

Mezze Plate – Hummus, Eggplant Dip, Tomato Salsa, Olive Oil & Dukka RM20

This mezze plate is an excellent choice if you want something light. I absolutely loved it.

Beef & Guiness Pie with Mashed Potato and Salad RM20 (The Day’s Special)

Hubs ordered the day's special and it was indeed very good. Thumbs up for the pie and mashed potato.

Iced Caramel with Gula Melaka Ice Cream RM16

This drink was very special and highly recommended if you like caramel. We absolutely loved the fragrant home made gula melaka ice cream.

Crushed Mint & Lime Soda RM10

A very refreshing drink. We loved it.

Steamed Apple Pudding with Gula Melaka Ice Cream RM 18

This was highly recommended by the waitress and we couldn't agree more.

Layered Ice Cream Cake - Gula Melaka, Chocolate & Vanilla with Chocolate Sauce RM18

This was another gula melaka ice cream dessert but it was so good we just couldn't resist it. I simply loved the crunchy caramelized sugar sprinkled on top of the ice cream.

Piccolo Latte RM9

Espresso – Single RM6

Overall, I loved the relaxed and lazy feel of the place, great coffee and excellent food and desserts. Another job well done by the Bon Ton group to preserve the Malaysia (and Penang) heritage.
