Flamingo Sunday Buffet Lunch - 65 dishes to delight

After a few failed attempts, we finally managed to make reservation for the family at the infamous Flamingo Sunday Buffet Lunch. The sumptuous buffet sporting 65 dishes was the talk of the town when it was introduced in April this year.

Now after six months, the buffet is still so popular that the hotel has to extend to the ballroom to cater to the overwhelming patronage. I am not surprised given the variety of both local and international fare and the price of only RM25 nett per adult. To top that off, the first 10 guests and all senior citizens age 65 years and above get an additional 50% discount.

Do not expect to get the best of Penang hawker food here but personally, I feel the price and variety more than made up for it.

Do book early to avoid dissapointment.

Ban Chan Kuih (at the junction of Solok Moulmein)

Ban Chan Kuih is a Chinese pancake made of fluor and egg, normally sprinkled with sugar and margarine and the optional grounded peanuts and sweet corn. Nowadays, the newer versions of ban chan kuih come with a variety of fillings e.g. ham, tuna etc.

Every time I walk past this traditional ban chan kuih stall at the junction of Solok Moulmein (in front of Swee Kong coffee shop, right opposite the Pulau Tikus police station), I notice the long queqe of people waiting for their ban chan kuih order. I figured the ban chan kuih must be good, if not why the queqe.

So, one day, I decided to order and try out the ban chan kuih. Since there were a few people before me, I told the ban chan kuih seller that I will be back for my order. He said okay but reminded me that it would take quiet a long time.
I went back to the stall about 30 minutes later for my 12 pieces of peanuts and sweet corn ban chan kuih but they were still not done yet. I had to wait another 20 minutes before they were ready.

After the long wait, it was time to taste the ban chan kuih. It was quite good and crispy when eaten while hot but a bit thick for my taste. And be prepared to wait though ;)

Made in cast iron pans over coal

P/S: My favourite ban chan kuih used to be from the stall in front of a stationary shop at Jalan Tan Sri Teh Ewe Lim, next to So Young Cafe. I haven't eaten the ban chan kuih for a while though so not sure if it's still as thin and crispy. Must try again one of these days.

Cintra Street Famous Pan Cake and Steamed Rice Cake

After our steamboat dinner at Goh Huat Seng, we decided to hop over to Cintra Street to buy the famous Cintra Street Ham Chim Peng and Pak Thong Kou. This modest stall is located right opposite De Tai Tong dim sum cafe, at the junction of Cintra Street and Campbell Street. It was close to 10 pm so they were already out of Pak Thong Kou (white sugar steamed cake). The only Ham Chim Peng pan cake they have was the salty version (they already ran out of the glutinous rice and red bean pan cake).

The lady at the stall unveiled the pancakes from under a piece of white cloth and we bought 15 of those at RM0.50 each.

The Ham Chim Peng was a bit cold when we got home but still full of the five spice flavour and just salty enough to give it that distinct taste. I will definitely be back again to try its Pak Thong Kou and glutinous rice and red bean Ham Chim Peng pan cake.
