Mon rods Kitchen 'Nasi Ayam Periuk Besar'

There is a new eatery named Mon rods Kitchen at the new D'Piazza Mall which serves 'Nasi Ayam Periuk Besar' which literally means 'Big Pot Chicken Rice'.

The interior is contemporary, chic and comfortable.

Their specialty is obviously Chicken Rice with some Noodles, Western Food, snacks, toast, and to my surprise, Omega soft boiled eggs as well.

There are four types of chicken on their menu, Ayam Dot Mai, Ayam Panggang (Barbecued Chicken), Ayam Madu (Honey Chicken) and Ayam Kampung (not available when I was there).

Ayam Dot Mai with Tomato Rice (RM5.70)

Ayam Panggang with Chicken Rice (RM5.50)

Kaya and Butter Toast (RM1.40)

Fresh Lemon Tea

The Ayam Dot Mai was deep fried so it was a bit dry. The tomato rice that came with it also lacked of taste. The Ayam Panggang was grilled well and retained the moisture of the chicken and thus was a better choice. It was served with a special spicy gravy.

The kaya and butter toast was quite a let down. I was hoping for something like the toast at Old Town but the bread served here were just the normal bread and was a bit cold and not crispy enough.

I may come back to try the Ayam Madu since I love the Ayam Madu at the nasi kandar joints.

One of the setbacks of this eatery was the time it took for our food to be served. We had to wait for some 30 minutes before our chicken rice was served. The staircase leading to the first floor of the eatery is also very narrow and is the only avenue for the waiters to send the food upstairs thus slowing down the speed of serving to some extent.

Restoran First Famous Federal (Lorong Susu)

We were at Restoran First Famous Federal at Lorong Susu which is popular for its roast chicken, roast duck, char siew and roast pork on a Saturday for lunch. They were enjoying brisk business with a sizable lunch crowd.

We ordered the roast duck (Pei Pa duck) and roast pork. The preserved vegetables ('Kiam Chai") soup was on the house and they were very generous with it. Some other chicken and duck rice sellers would have charged for the soup.

The duck skin was crispy and so was the roast pork skin. The preserved vegetables soup was thick, spicy and tasty and came with duck meat and lots of preserved vegetables.

The total bill came to RM21.80 for a plate of roast duck (Pei Pa duck) and roast pork combination and three plates of white rice. My dad feels that the price was very reasonable given the big plate of roast meat ;)

According to Penang-Online.com, the current owner Eddie Chan inherited his father's forte and expanded the business. His father apparently ran a very popular Hainanese Chicken Rice stall in Penang more than 30 years ago.

Humble Beginnings - Mango Cheese, Strawberry Heaven, Swiss Chocolate Velvet Crepe Cakes

If you have read my previous post on Humble Beginnings, you will know that I am a great fan of their crepe cakes.

We recently bought a few more cakes for the office.

Mango Cheese (Large 1.3kg)

Strawberry Heaven (Regular 0.9kg)

Swiss Chocolate Velvet (Large 1.3kg)

Acccording to Humble Beginning's owner and proprieter, Amos Chong, the Swiss Chocolate Velvet is quite a favourite among his customers.

However, my personal favourite is the Strawberry Heaven crepe cake as the sourish strawberries gave a good twist to the creamy crepe cake.

The Mango Cheese cake was quite special as well, with real mango flesh in between the layers of crepe.

Bread History Tiramisu Cake

We recently bought a Bread History Tiramisu Cake. The cake was quite good but could be better if a little more moist. It retails at RM62.

Tiramisu Cake

P/S: My favourite Bread History cake is the Lemon Cheese Cake. The lemony flavour gives the cake a refreshing flavour and thus makes the creamy cheese cake lighter. Definitely worth a try.

Canton Gourmet

Canton Gourmet is the new restaurant which has taken over the shop lot which used to be occupied by Habana (ground floor). View my previous posts on Habana here and here.

The have retained Habana's decor and have just added some extra chairs and tables.

The menu is quite limited with primarily different types of noodles, rice and snacks or finger food.

Prawn Dumpling Noodles (Soup) RM7.90

Mushroom Shanghai Noodles Soup RM5.90

Curry Fish Balls

Overall, the Mushroom Shanghai Noodles Soup was quite mediocre for my taste. The noodles soup consisted of Udon, mushrooms, vegetables with wolfberries in the soup. The Prawn Dumpling Noodles and Curry Fish Balls were quite okay though they sure made me miss the curry fish balls in Hong Kong :(

Puspamalar Food Corner

Puspamalar Food Corner serves a variety of vegetarian food ranging fron Indian to Chinese to Western to cakes and pastries. It is converted from a 3-storey terrace house at Jalan Bagan Serai and may go unnoticed from the main road. The food corner occupies the ground floor of the terrace house.

As you walk through the front gate, you will see tables and chairs arranged on the porch with a station whipping up different types of roti e.g. roti canai, tosai, roti naan, murtabak etc. The decor is quite straightforward and minimal but the place is clean and airy.

The first time I was there, I was very impressed with the variety of food available at Puspamalar. There was a white board on the wall which lines out the specials of the day which could be anything from Lamb Chop to Bah Kut Teh to Nasi Lemak etc.

Sometimes some people say, "When you are Jack of all trades, you are Master of none". However, everything that we have tried at Puspamalar so far was very up to standard and good. The waiter recommended the Cheese Tosai and it was indeed very tasty and special. The total bill came up to around RM12.

US Pizza

We were somewhere around Gembira Parade at Greenlane so we decided to pay US Pizza a visit for a late lunch.

We ordered one of the X-Treme Meal sets i.e. the X-twin set which includes 1 regular pizza of your choice, 1 set of Crazi Garlic Twist, 3 pieces of New York Wings, and 2 glasses of American Ice Tea at RM33 (normal price RM38.50)

We ordered for the regular pizza to be a half & half pizza with the Chicken Classic and New Yorker toppings at an additional RM2. We opted for the Original Hand Tossed pizza crust. We also ordered an additional bowl of Mushroom Soup (RM4.50).

New Yorker (mushroom, beef pepperoni, ground beef, chicken ham)
Chicken Classic (chicken, mushroom, double cheese)

Overall, it was a very good choice to go back to US Pizza after such a long time. The outlet at Greenlane is still very well maintained and cozy. We were the only people at the restaurant having our lunch at 3 pm so we had the whole place to ourselves :)

The pizza was good and so were the wings and garlic twist.

They are currently running a promotion under the 3P.za Super Saver package for 2 regular pizzas at RM50 only for delivery and take-out only (original price RM71.85, serves 6 - 7. terms & conditions apply). They also have their on-going Double Tuesday promotion with 2 regular pizzas at RM28 (save up to RM19.90) or 2 large pizzas at RM38 (save up to RM27.90) on every Tuesdays only.
